According to latest figures, only about half of the fixed speed cameras are actually turned on and catching out speeding motorists.
This is not including the mobile speed cameras.
Places like Northamptonshire have turned all cameras off but left the structures in place as a deterrent.
Staffordshire has 272 fixed cameras but only 10 are switched on.
Places like West Yorkshire and Kent has 25% of their cameras working.
Other places may have more working fixed cameras.
So, depending where you are, there may be none working.
However, don't chance it
If there is a speed camera ahead it should have a warning notice beforehand, then its should be visible when close to it. Fixed cameras for example will have a bright yellow marking of some sort. Mobile cameras will be in high visibility vans.
Don't take it for granted that a speed camera isn't working because it just might get activated at any time.
Then if some speed cameras don't work and are never going to, they just become hazards surely.
If they are leaving them as a way to make motorists slow down, then that is wrong too.
If they are not being used then they will be rotting away with no maintenance and that will cause pollution.
